Condensation on Windows: Causes and Practical Ways to Reduce It
Water on the inside of windows forms when moisture in the air reaches a surface cold enough for condensation. Occasional light misting can be normal, but repeated heavy water, mould or damaged finishes suggests that moisture production, ventilation and surface temperature need attention.
WHY WATER FORMS ON WINDOWS
Warm air can hold more water vapour than cold air. When humid indoor air meets cold glass, it cools and releases water. Bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens are common problem areas because everyday activities add moisture.
WHAT MORNING CONDENSATION CAN TELL YOU
Bedroom windows often become wet overnight because occupants release moisture while the room cools and ventilation is reduced. The pattern is useful, but window moisture alone does not diagnose the whole building.
Condensation between sealed glazing panes usually indicates a failed glazing unit rather than excess room humidity.
REDUCE MOISTURE AT SOURCE
Use lids when cooking, avoid drying clothes indoors where possible and keep bathroom doors closed while bathing. If clothes must dry inside, ventilate the room and manage the additional humidity.
USE VENTILATION EFFECTIVELY
Extractor fans should discharge outside and operate for long enough to clear moisture. Trickle vents and background ventilation should remain open where intended. Opening windows briefly can help, but it is not a substitute for effective extraction in high-moisture rooms.
HEATING AND COLD SURFACES
Steady heating can keep internal surfaces warmer than short bursts followed by long cold periods. Curtains and furniture should not block airflow across cold window reveals.
Insulation or glazing improvements may reduce cold surfaces, but ventilation must still be considered after making a home more airtight.
WHEN IT MAY NOT BE SIMPLE CONDENSATION
Rain-linked staining, damp plaster away from cold surfaces, defective seals or water entering around frames may indicate penetrating damp. Ventilation alone will not repair an external defect.
