Extractor Fan or Dehumidifier: Which Helps With Condensation?
Extractor fans and dehumidifiers can both reduce indoor moisture, but they work differently. An extractor removes moisture-laden air from the room where it is produced. A dehumidifier removes water from air circulating through the appliance.
THEY DO DIFFERENT JOBS
Mechanical extraction is normally the first line of control in bathrooms and kitchens because it removes moisture close to its source. A dehumidifier can support drying or humidity control, but it does not provide fresh air or remove pollutants in the same way as ventilation.
WHEN AN EXTRACTOR FAN IS MOST USEFUL
An effective fan should discharge outside, have a suitable airflow rate and run for long enough after bathing or cooking. Humidity-controlled or timed overrun operation can improve performance where appropriate.
A noisy, blocked or incorrectly ducted fan may appear to operate without clearing the room.
WHEN A DEHUMIDIFIER CAN HELP
A dehumidifier may help during drying, in spaces where humidity remains high, or as a temporary supporting measure. Its performance depends on room temperature, capacity, placement and regular emptying or drainage.
It will use electricity and should not be presented as a repair for a leaking building.
WHY EQUIPMENT ALONE MAY NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM
Persistent damp may also involve penetrating water, plumbing leaks, cold bridges, inadequate heating or defective insulation. Ventilation alone will not correct those defects.
Likewise, a dehumidifier can lower airborne humidity while an unresolved leak continues to wet walls or timber.
CHECK THAT VENTILATION ACTUALLY WORKS
Check whether the fan discharges outside, whether grilles and ducts are clear and whether replacement air can enter the room. Internal recirculating cooker hoods do not remove water vapour outdoors.
A professional assessment can measure humidity and consider the pattern of mould or condensation.
A BALANCED MOISTURE-CONTROL PLAN
The best approach may combine source control, effective extraction, background ventilation, steady heating and repairs to cold or wet parts of the building. No single product suits every property.
